FERNANDO DE NORONHA

The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, with its rich ecosystem and stunning natural beauty, always roused the attention of people from all around the world, wanting to get close to this true oasis, that seems lost in the immense blue ocean.

The Fernando de Noronha National Maritime Park created in 1988 and with a total area of 11 270 hectares protects the rich marine life of the archipelago, one of the best diving areas in Brazil, with warm waters and visibility up to 50 metres. Besides the natural beauty, historic constructions tell a bit about its past, marked by the desire of the French to take the island from Portuguese control.

The archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, 360 km from Natal and 545km from Pernambuco the state to which it belongs. There are daily flights from Recife the capital of Pernambuco and Natal. The climate of the region is tropical, with an average annual temperature between 24°C and 32°C. The Maritime Park can be visited the whole year. The dry season from August to January is best for diving.

The Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, whose principal island has the same name, is situated on an oceanic mountain 4000m high. Blue volcanic rocks rising out of the ocean can be seen everywhere. The highest point of the archipelago is Morro do Pico (321m) and it is located on the main island of Fernando de Noronha. Below the waters of this Maritime reserve there is amazing diversity. There are close to 230 species of fish and 15 types of coral, as well as sharks, turtles and dolphins.
