Take a journey through Brazilian history with the Brazil Historic tour. During the 18th century gold and other precious metals were taken from Minas Gerais state and transported along the “Estrada Real” (Royal Highway) to the ports of Paraty and Rio de Janeiro to be shipped to Portugal. Most of the places you will visit on this tour are part of this history. The treasure that was transported along this famous route is reflected in the constructions from that time. Churches of the Baroque style, richly adorned in gold and silver. The wealth from those times remains today in these historical buildings. Other prosperous times in Brazil’s history such as the coffee boom of the 19th century bequeathed many magnificent estates and picturesque towns in the Vale do Café region. Accommodation in Parati (2 nights), Petropolis, Vassouras, Ouro Preto, São João del Rei (1 night each).
Day 1: Rio – Parati
City tour of historic centre of Parati
Day 2: Parati
You can explore Parati at your leisure or take a highly recommended boat excursion to nearby beaches and islands. The world famous puppet show at night is also recommended.
Day 3: Petropolis
Depart Parati and travel to Petropolis. City tour of Petropolis - The Imperial City. Optional Sound and Light show at night.
Day 4: Vassouras
See some of the beautifully preserved plantation estates from the coffee boom era in this region (Vale do Café). Accommodation is in one of these estates.
Day 5: Ouro Preto
Leaving Vassouras and travel to Minas Gerais state and arrive in the city of Ouro Preto. City tour of this historical city full of fine examples of architecture from the Baroque era.
Day 6: Tiradentes and São João del Rei
More beautifully preserved cities that have retained the charm of the 17th and 18th century. Included is a steam train journey from São João del Rei to Tiradentes where you have a tour of the historic centre.
Day 7: São João del Rei-Rio
City tour of the historic centre and see the magnificent São Francisco de Assis church in São João before returning to Rio.
